Can a resonant centrifugal pump have its frequency changed to save energy? Why does the vibration increase between 70-80%?
There is no problem with this frequency conversion; it not only saves energy but also improves the operating conditions of the pump. As for increased vibration, that has not occurred
When the speed of the pump shaft gradually increases and approaches the natural vibration frequency of the pump rotor, the pump begins to vibrate violently; when the speed is above or below this value, the pump operates smoothly. The speed at which resonance occurs in the pump is usually referred to as the critical speed nc.
Pumps with variable frequency speed control exhibit vibration in the 70-80% range, which should be the resonance range. One of my clients has this same problem; he has a water pump with 3,000 revolutions per minute and a power output of 1,600 kW. The coupling can be replaced with a non-contact coupling, such as a permanent magnet coupling or a hydraulic coupling, or it can be replaced with a variable-speed hydraulic coupling or a permanent magnet speed regulator.
