When installing a new horizontal split-compressor unit or performing major repairs on it, the total shaft play of the rotor is measured. Once the rotor is in place, should the air seal (the type with upper and lower teeth) be removed before measuring the total shaft play again?
I don’t think it’s necessary. I think removing the leakage measured through sealing is used to determine the position of the stator and rotor.
Without disassembly, what is measured is the dynamic and static clearance

The person performing the lifting operation needs to have a high level of precision – the smaller the movements, the better. One of the two lifting points must have a chain guide to adjust its level.
