In 1980, I was at the Maintenance Department of Daqing Petrochemical Refinery. I was responsible for equipment anti-corrosion work, and as someone with a background in mechanics, my understanding of anti-corrosion at that time was limited to the idea of painting the equipment. But when I heard that refineries suffer losses of 2% of their output value each year due to equipment corrosion, amounting to tens of millions of yuan, I felt it was my duty to take on this heavy burden. The following year, I attended a short training course on corrosion prevention for petrochemical equipment held in Beijing; to improve my professional skills as quickly as possible, I seized this rare opportunity day and night. The beautiful spring weather in Beijing didn’t catch my attention at all; my presence was constantly confined between the library and the classroom. Half a year of study has passed in the blink of an eye; through relentless effort, I have acquired various knowledge skills related to corrosion prevention, taking an important step toward entering the field of corrosion protection. When I returned, my colleagues asked me about the attractions I had visited in Beijing, but as it was my first time there, I was at a loss for words and couldn’t answer them. Back at the refinery, I immediately threw myself into the various types of equipment with great enthusiasm. In the scorching heat of midsummer, he had to go in and out of various tanks and reactors, large and small, every day; the unpleasant odors made it impossible for him to eat, and sweat all over his body caused intense itching ； In the cold winter, while observing the corrosion on the tank walls right next to the icy steel plates, his thick cotton work clothes were not enough to protect him from the severe cold in Heilongjiang, causing him to shiver ； Amidst the firecracker sounds of the Spring Festival, I ignored it while testing new types of anti-corrosion materials ； Under the night lights, I stay awake, conceiving one new idea after another. In 1989, the first paper titled \"Application of Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene Coatings for Corrosion Protection in Ammonium Nitrate Plants\" was published in the journal \"Comprehensive Corrosion Control\". Since then, I have continued to produce research results year after year, publishing dozens of professional papers one after another, and the applications in production have generated over 50 million yuan in benefits for the enterprise. I also continuously enrich myself through correspondence courses, so as to stay abreast of the latest developments in the anti-corrosion industry. In 1996, I was awarded the honorary title of “Self-taught Expert among Workers in Heilongjiang Province” ； In 1998, it received another national award as a “National Self-Taught Worker” (along with the Gold Medal for Self-Taught Achievement in 1998) ； In 1999, my another paper, \"Corrosion of Gas Cylinders and Comprehensive Protection Measures\", won the Excellent Paper Award at the \"International Chemical Industry Science and Technology Achievements Exhibition and Product Promotion Seminar\" held in Singapore. Flowers and applause began to surround me. In the eyes of ordinary people, being able to win such a national award is enough; it provides them with something to show off and demand. But I have always kept a clear head; I know full well that to achieve greater success one must look upward, in order to see the pinnacle of one’s career and to motivate oneself to keep surpassing one’s limits. I always treat every day as a new beginning, adjusting my mindset to motivate myself to face one challenge after another. And what I often say is, \"Compared to Professor Xiao Jimei, a veteran in the field of corrosion prevention and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who has written over 400 papers in her lifetime, what do my own achievements even count for?\\" ”Soon, I achieved some more successes in my career... III. My strong capabilities enabled me to achieve remarkable results. In April 2004, the “China Corrosion Prevention Masters” competition was held by the “China Corrosion Prevention Technology Association”, the highest-level professional organization in China’s corrosion prevention industry; hundreds of experts in this field from various regions across the country participated in this competition. This selection criteria stipulates “having more than 20 years of experience in anti-corrosion work” ； Possesses high expertise in the theoretical and practical aspects of corrosion prevention ； Have published papers or books in international or national professional journals ； Strict application requirements such as “having an impact domestically and internationally.” After four months of intense competition, I was ultimately elected as one of the first 10 \"China Corrosion Masters\" thanks to my outstanding results and solid skills – an honor that represents the highest distinction in China’s corrosion prevention industry. Those who shared the award stage with me were either elderly scholars with gray hair or professors from renowned universities; I was the only ordinary technician among them... I have always ignored the favoritism shown to other companies, but I am more than willing to share my knowledge generously with those companies that truly need my help. I have visited Shanghai, Harbin, Dandong and other places on many occasions to conduct anti-corrosion training courses for local enterprises, and I have sacrificed my valuable time to teach at colleges and vocational schools, in the hope that through my efforts I can help train more professionals in the field of anti-corrosion. Many students who have attended my lectures have said happily that what you teach is knowledge we cannot learn from books, and it is of great help to our work. In 2005, due to my outstanding abilities, I was hired by Daqing Petroleum Institute as a supervisor for master’s students in mechanical engineering... IV. Diligent work has enabled me to produce numerous works. Faced with so many honors and publications, some people may wonder, \"Mr. Wang, how did you manage to write so many papers?\" ”My answer was: “Theses are done through work, not written!” As long as one works diligently, focuses on a goal, and pursues it with perseverance, one will eventually reach the desired destination. And in science, not an ounce of falsehood is tolerated; only by being truly honest and upright can one achieve success in one’s career. ” In 2004, a leak in the acidic water tank in the refinery’s sulfur processing unit not only reduced the lifespan of the equipment but also polluted the surrounding environment. To solve the problem, I went to the site repeatedly for investigations to determine the patterns of corrosion. The strong sulfur smell made him feel nauseous, and he was unable to eat properly for several days. In the end, I found that although the wastewater in that tank contained acidic substances, its actual pH level was alkaline, whereas the original anti-corrosion materials were designed to resist acids. To determine the most suitable anticorrosion material among the many available, I conducted coupon tests on 5 different coatings, including modified furan resin and titanium nanopolymer coatings. Through nearly 5 months of testing, it was determined that the use of titanium nanopolymer coatings would solve the corrosion problem of this tank, extending its service life by more than twice. Meanwhile, this technology also filled a gap in **this field. My article titled \"Application of Titanium Nanopolymer Coatings on Acidic Water Tanks\" was also included in the Proceedings of the First Symposium on the Development of Techniques for Applying Nanomaterials in Coatings. Now that I am retired, I am busy every day with no free time; a large amount of research and practical work takes up most of my weekends and holidays. Some people ask me if I’m tired, and I say, “It’s a lie to say I’m not tired…” But my persistent pursuit of my ideals drives me to keep making innovations in the field of corrosion prevention. It is the resilient will that the black soil has given me that enables me to handle heavy work with ease. To this day, I remain enthusiastic about working on corrosion and protection in my country.
