Why do the inlet and outlet share the same opening in the spherical tank design drawings?
Have you ever seen a door that allows entry and exit in the same direction?
This is related to the process operations of the spherical tank; if the material intake and output are carried out intermittently, the inlet and outlet can share the same opening on the spherical tank, with them being separated after the material exits the tank. This can reduce the number of spherical tank joints, decrease the number of leakage points, and also save on manufacturing costs. However, this setup might have some drawbacks; generally, the feed inlet needs to extend inside the spherical tank to prevent cavitation, while the discharge outlet should be at the same level as the tank’s surface.
Sinopec seems to have a document that requires the import and export ports to be the same, and it also specifies the requirements for filling the spherical tanks with water. You can look it up online.

This is different from atmospheric-pressure storage tanks, whose inlet and outlet are separate
