I have a question regarding the scope of skills covered by welder certification exams. Specifically, if a welder takes an exam using the GTAW as the root pass method and SMAW as the finish pass method, can that welder go on to weld seams using only GTAW or only SMAW? What is the difference in the scope of coverage after obtaining the certificate between this combined exam and the separate exam?
If the thickness coverage allows, GTAW welding can be used entirely. The SMAW process should be marked with (K), so it cannot be used for root welding; it can be used for double-sided welding, but not for single-sided welding
Thank you very much. I have another question: can one weld joint be welded with two welders, one handling the root pass and the other the finish pass? Because when combined, they cover the area perfectly. Thank you!
A combination of 2 welders can be used for welding the overlay; I often use this approach.
For the combined test, the weld metal thickness applicable to each welding method is twice its respective thickness; if the thickness to be welded using a particular welding method exceeds 12 mm, then there is no limit on the thickness applicable to that welding method
Adding to what was said above, when using GTAW+SMAW welding, the SMAW welding method is applied with a backing plate when used alone; the root pass procedure does not apply in this case.
