What do the design pressure and nominal operating pressure of a device actually mean? Can the actual operating pressure exceed the device’s nominal operating pressure for an extended period of time (as long as it does not exceed the design pressure)?
The design pressure is generally higher than the operating pressure; it is used to determine the dimensions of the equipment as well as the selection of pipes, flanges, and fittings, and it is taken into consideration during the design process. At the same operating temperature, it is possible to operate for an extended period at pressures not exceeding the design pressure; however, this will cause regulatory authorities to give you trouble: lol

Operating the pressure above the parameters specified on the equipment’s nameplate is considered improper operation, although it does not pose any safety risks. If it is necessary to operate at pressures above the rated pressure over a long period of time (as long as this is within the set pressure range of the safety valve), it is possible to request modifications to the pressure vessel, adjust the operating parameters, and carry out the relevant procedures in accordance with Section 5 of the Pressure Vessels Regulations, along with submitting the necessary approvals
