Why are pipelines in the power industry commonly connected by welding, while pipelines in the chemical industry are usually connected using flange bolts? I heard that pipeline welding can prevent leaks, so what are the reasons behind using flange bolts in the chemical industry?

It is not common for pipelines to be connected using flanges in oil refining and chemical industries; what the original poster is referring to are probably some special sectors. Regarding this issue, as I have seen, the connection for lined pipes is achieved using flange connections, with acid-resistant pipes being the most common type. Firstly, it is a problem related to the lining process; it’s difficult to line pipes that are too long. Secondly, most lined pipes are manufactured (pre-fabricated) by the producers, and it’s hard to transport them when they are long. Plastic lining on-site after welding is basically not a concern.
In power pipelines, corrosion is the main environmental issue; cables are covered with insulation. In the chemical industry, due to equipment corrosion and the need for regular maintenance during operation, flange connections facilitate maintenance and replacement
