What are the failure modes of tower-type containers? What are the failure modes of vertical containers?
The basic failure modes of pressure vessels are the same: strength failure, stiffness failure, and stability failure.
LZ focuses on towers and vertical equipment; compared to horizontal vessels, the biggest difference might lie in the wind-induced vibration of towers, along with seismic considerations. However, the basic failure modes are, as mentioned above, those three. But due to differences in equipment specifications, the priority of these failure modes varies, so the key aspects to consider differ as well. For example, in the case of externally pressurized vessels, there are two possible failure modes: instability due to insufficient stiffness, and failure due to insufficient strength. For cylinders with a diameter-to-wall thickness ratio of 10 or more, circumferential instability always occurs before strength failure; therefore, stability calculations are a primary concern.

Apart from the common failure modes of corrosion, joint leakage, and strength failure, for towers: instability is mainly caused by excessive axial compressive stress resulting from earthquakes and wind moments, as well as fatigue damage to the fillet welds between the shell and the base and to the anchor bolts under lateral wind loads.
