The training materials for pressure vessel design held in Shanghai in 2005 state the following: Question: Can austenitic stainless steel materials and welds be inspected using ultrasonic testing, and why? Answer: Due to factors such as twin boundaries present in austenitic stainless steel, which significantly affect the attenuation and propagation of ultrasonic waves, ultrasonic testing has not yet been widely adopted for this type of stainless steel. Today’s ultrasonic testing technology presents no problems at all, whether it is welding joints or raw materials.
Therefore, for the weld inspection of stainless steel equipment, radiographic testing is the only option available; for various multi-layer and stainless steel applications, radiographic testing is the more reasonable choice. So, what testing methods are involved in the inspection of stainless steel plates?
Why is a workpiece thickness of 10 mm chosen as the starting point?
I think it’s because ultrasound testing relies on incident and reflected waves, and if the thickness is too thin, the results become inaccurate.
For carbon steel and low-alloy steel, the minimum thickness is 6 mm
