Today, I heard a colleague say that 1.6-meter-wide carbon steel plates are difficult to obtain for the design drawings of large storage tanks, and it’s necessary to adjust the width of these plates. So I checked the standard atlas for storage tanks – aren’t those plates already 1.6 meters wide? By taking into account the cutting allowance, the actual width is 1.58 meters. I would like to ask everyone: Is a 1.6-meter-wide steel plate considered a standard size for steel plates? The steel plate manufacturer said that there are no plates 1.6 meters wide available in standard sizes; custom-made plates can be produced, but the cost is high and the delivery time is long. So should we try to avoid using less common specifications when designing storage tanks? Both flat-rolled plates and original plates have their advantages and disadvantages. So, are there any regulatory requirements specifying which type of steel plate must be used for large storage tanks?

Ignore that atlas – our company rarely uses flat panels, and their quality isn’t as good as that of the original manufacturer’s panels

The edge plates and bottom ring plates of the large storage tanks we design all meet the requirements for plates used in pressure vessels; if flat plates must be used, re-inspection is required. The material selection requirements shall comply with GB/T50341.
Normally, the plates are 1500mm or 2000mm in size, but those with a size of 2000mm are relatively more expensive
Flat panels are similar to toilet paper in terms of having high internal stress, with a different stress distribution as well. Avoid using it for applications with high requirements regarding appearance and welding. It also depends on what medium is stored in the tank; if it’s just an ordinary water tank, you can settle for a cheaper option. In addition, GB150.4 5.1.1 requires retesting of the mechanical properties for austenitic stainless steel flat plates used in pressure-bearing components
Yes, I also asked the manufacturer and they said 1.5 meters is the cheapest. I also told the client that the original tablet would be better, but they found it too expensive; sigh
Residue tank. I mentioned original flat cutting, and they said it would be costly.
The residue tank should be made of carbon steel; if the client wants to save money, then we’ll go with what the client requests. However, tablets generally have thin walls. It’s 1.5 meters wide; we can calculate how many extra welds are required, and the additional cost for construction (welding rods + labor) is also money
The thinnest roof plate of our residue tanks is 8 mm thick, not to mention the lower wall plates and edge plates. Is it confirmed that the flat plate is this thick?
