The lower edge of the downcomer in a sieve tray tower should be above the liquid level of the lower tray.
If it is above the liquid level, a liquid seal cannot be formed; the gas phase will flow along the downcomer, hindering the downward movement of the liquid phase, and in severe cases this can lead to flooding of the tower.
