I would like to ask whether it is necessary to install edge plates when using steel plates of the same thickness as the bottom plate for large vertical cylindrical storage tanks over 12.5 m in height
The standard states “suitable”; at the same thickness, what is the purpose of the edge plate?
As requested by the client, I designed it myself; per the standards, edge plates are required, and if one has experience, they can decide on these themselves.

It’s clearly written in 50341 – why insist on going against the standards?
When setting the edge plates, the stress conditions on the bottom plate should be taken into consideration; such regulations were established in order to save materials. If one has sufficient financial resources and can use plates of the same thickness for both the middle sections and the edge sections, as long as the minimum thickness required by the standards is met, I think it’s not necessary to use edge plates at all.
