How is the tube length set in HTRI6.0?

In HTRI6.0, the program defaults a tube length of 6.096 meters, which seems to be the length of a straight section in one direction; the calculated area is relatively large. If this value is changed to 3 meters, the area becomes much smaller. So, how exactly should this length be set?
