Do stainless steel flat sheets used for welding process evaluation need to have their mechanical properties retested?
I believe it is not necessary; retesting is pointless.
Weld evaluation primarily checks the performance of the weld; as long as the performance of the base metal does not affect the evaluation, that’s sufficient.
It’s not necessary for reputable large companies, unless you’re using Denan boards
The assessment for pressure vessel workers also falls within the quality assurance system for pressure vessels; in this quality assurance system, the acceptance of flat plates is not determined by their purpose. The material must be qualified before moving on. If the edges of the flat plate are not up to standard, it will be difficult for the weld quality to meet requirements after welding, and in such cases the manufacturing process is deemed unacceptable. It is then impossible to accurately determine whether it is a material issue or a process issue. The edges of flat-rolled steel sheets are prone to defects caused by steel-making impurities, so trimming is necessary; however, whether all such defects have been removed after trimming can only be determined through re-inspection. And the beveled groove is the weld that follows.
