I saw this statement for the second time today. The original text in the interpretation of GB50160-2018 states as follows: 5.7.7 Flat belt drives are prone to accumulating static electricity, which may generate sparks. According to measurements conducted by the Beijing Institute of Labor Protection in a certain factory, the static voltage accumulated in V-belt drives can reach 2500–7000 V, which is very dangerous. Therefore, this regulation stipulates that belts must not be used in compressors for flammable gases, as well as in pumps for liquefied hydrocarbons and flammable liquids. If anti-static belts are indeed necessary for other rotating equipment, they should be used. The air cooler is installed at a high position with forced ventilation, and can be driven by an anti-static V-belt.
Belt drive can protect the motor; for example, the vibrations of the equipment are not transmitted directly to the motor. If the equipment is overloaded and the motor cannot handle it, the belt will slip, and it is the belt that gets damaged first. But that doesn’t mean the motor won’t overheat; if the motor operates in a harsh environment with a lot of dust, high ambient temperatures, and poor heat dissipation, it can still overheat. Belt drive merely reduces the likelihood of the drive motor being damaged due to faults in the equipment itself.
