For cracks in the composite plates of pressure vessels, these can be removed by grinding; if the crack does not reach the base material, welding repairs can be carried out. Does this constitute major maintenance for pressure vessels?
It does not belong. The composite layer of pressure vessel composite plates is not designed for strength.
It’s of course a major repair. TSG 21-2016 defines major repairs of pressure vessels as the replacement of the main pressure-bearing components, reshaping, patching, as well as the rewelding of Class A and B butt joints in pressure vessels manufactured by welding methods, or the repair of adhesive joints in non-metallic pressure vessels. Therefore, repairing composite materials necessarily requires partial removal of the base layer and the coating before repairs can be carried out; it is definitely a major repair.
The review plate should not be considered a primary compressive element
If the depth of damage exceeds half, weld repair is required; generally, local inspection agencies require that this be treated as a major repair, with corresponding notification and supervision during the inspection process
