On July 18th, a presentation on the technical achievements related to this 120-cubic-meter fixed ultra-low temperature storage tank was held at the Equipment Manufacturing Branch of CPECC’s Seventh Construction Company, marking a significant breakthrough in China’s ultra-low temperature equipment sector. Previously, at the 12th World Congress on Chemical Engineering and the 21st Asia-Pacific Chemical Industry Association Conference, this technology was recognized as an outstanding technical achievement at the \"2025 International Chemical Innovation Exhibition New Products and Technologies Presentation.\" The successful development of the 120-cubic-meter fixed ultra-low temperature storage tank has enabled full autonomy and control over key materials, core manufacturing processes, and the overall production of the unit; its static evaporation rate is less than 0.49%/day, which is at the international advanced level. Compared to existing small containers in the domestic market, the loading time for this storage tank has been reduced from 7 days to 8 hours, while the gasification rate during the loading process has dropped from 50% to 3%. To date, CPECC has filed a total of 18 invention patents related to this technology, and has taken the lead in formulating 9 industry and group standards. Furthermore, this product has obtained the PED certification from Bureau Veritas in France. Over a period of 3 years, CPECC overcame challenges such as the limited availability of physical property data for ultra-low temperature materials and the difficulty of evacuating air from insulating materials, thereby ensuring the gas-tightness, reliability, stability, as well as the crack resistance and insulation properties of the storage tanks under extreme temperature differences. On March 17 this year, the tank was tested at the project site. Its technology can be applied in fields such as cryogenic liquids like liquid hydrogen, and it can also support cryostats for controlled nuclear fusion and cryogenic plants, offering broad application prospects. Yuan Shiyi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that the release of this \"major national asset\" is inspiring; the next step is to comprehensively improve the software, hardware, as well as theoretical and technical aspects, in order to establish China’s first industrial chain for ultra-low temperature storage tanks and achieve industrialization.
On December 17, 2024, China’s first large-capacity ultra-low temperature storage tank with a volume of 120 cubic meters, independently developed by an engineering construction company, successfully passed the PED certification issued by Bureau Veritas in France. This achievement marks the overcoming of the bottleneck related to the large-scale storage of ultra-low temperature substances at -269 degrees Celsius in China, and it shows that China’s large-capacity ultra-low temperature pressure vessels meet the international standards for quality control. In recent years, the group company has made significant efforts to develop natural gas cryogenic treatment services, and by carrying out projects such as light hydrocarbon recovery, ethane recovery, and comprehensive utilization of natural gas, it has continuously expanded the production scale of high-value-added natural gas products. To overcome the challenges associated with the storage and transportation of cryogenic fluids such as liquid hydrogen and liquid nitrogen, at the beginning of 2022, the engineering construction company began working on the development of large-capacity ultra-cryogenic pressure vessels. These vessels come in two types: fixed storage tanks and mobile tank containers, and are capable of storing fluids at temperatures close to absolute zero. To date, the engineering construction company has applied for 19 patents related to ultra-low temperature pressure vessels, and established 9 industry standards and corporate standards in this area. A preliminary standard system for the design and manufacturing of ultra-low temperature pressure vessels has been put in place, providing strong support for the high-quality development of the domestic natural gas cryogenic industry. Currently, this storage tank is being tested and used at the construction site, and it has successfully achieved the storage of ultra-low temperature media.
