Prevention first, life above all. ----------------------------------------- Recently, Wugang Company of Hebei Iron and Steel Group successfully completed the development of 201-millimeter-thick high-value hydrogen-resistant steel plates in bulk for the first time. The performance metrics of these plates meet industry-leading standards, and they will replace imported materials in the manufacture of pressure vessels for a key project designed by CNPC. Hydrogen-resistant steel possesses excellent high-temperature mechanical properties, resistance to high-temperature oxidation, corrosion resistance, and processability. It is widely used in industries such as petrochemicals, coal conversion, nuclear power, and thermal power, enabling the manufacture of large-scale equipment that operates under harsh conditions with complex corrosive environments. Hebei Iron and Steel persists in strengthening and improving its specialty steel products, focusing on the needs of key projects both domestically and internationally. It makes great efforts to develop more products that are the best in the industry, unique in their kind, or capable of replacing imported products, thereby elevating the quality of its product portfolio as well as its customer base. During the project coordination process, Wugang had in-depth discussions with the designers from CNPC. In response to the need to use hydrogen-resistant steel in a severe corrosive environment involving type II wet H₂S, they designed hydrogen-resistant steel plates with a thickness of 201 millimeters, whose corrosion resistance was more than twice that of conventional steel plates; this solution was approved by the client. During the supply assurance process, in light of the fact that production difficulties increased exponentially, a specialized technical service team integrating sales, research, and production was established. This team worked to continuously optimize production processes, implementing improvements in rolling and other stages related to process control and cooling, thereby ensuring the successful production of hydrogen-resistant steel plates. The defect detection rates and performance compliance rates for these products were both 100%, satisfying the personalized needs of customers. Angang Group is one of the largest manufacturers and comprehensive service providers of steel materials in the world. It is currently China’s largest supplier of steel for home appliances and the second-largest supplier for the automotive industry. It is also a leader in the production of steel for offshore engineering and construction bridges. Angang directly or indirectly owns stakes in more than 70 overseas companies, controlling overseas assets worth over $9 billion. In recent years, the global steel industry has been actively engaging in hydrogen-based metallurgy practices. Steel companies in Europe, Japan, South Korea, and other regions have all developed roadmaps for low-carbon metallurgy technologies that include hydrogen-based metallurgy, accelerating research and development, testing, and application in order to achieve breakthroughs in process technologies for carbon neutrality. In February 2022, the **National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment jointly issued the \"Guiding Principles for Promoting the High-Quality Development of the Steel Industry.\" These guidelines state that by 2025, the industry’s investment in research and development is expected to reach 1.5%, with breakthroughs achieved in advanced manufacturing technologies such as hydrogen-based metallurgy, low-carbon metallurgy, clean steel production, thin strip casting and rolling, and headless rolling. At present, some domestic steel companies have already released plans for hydrogen-based metallurgy, built demonstration projects that have been put into operation, and achieved certain innovative breakthroughs. However, these demonstration projects are still in the stage of industrial testing, and issues such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of relevant standards, high costs, and safety concerns related to the use of hydrogen remain. Moreover, at this stage, hydrogen used taking into account factors such as gas sources, production, storage and transportation, and costs is mostly \"gray hydrogen,\" so there is still a long way to go before \"green hydrogen metallurgy\" can be realized.
