Background: Previously, the customer used expanded PTFE and 3.2 mm thick GYLON® 3500 to seal the large-diameter manway covers of FRP storage tanks and hydrochloric acid absorption towers. Challenges: These low-load flange seals have long been a significant challenge. FRP flanges only allow low bolt torque, making it difficult to achieve an effective seal at the flange connection. Small cracks on the surface of phenolic resin flanges can become leakage paths. To seal the cracked flange surface, a type of room-temperature curing coating is applied to the flange surface before installing the gasket. After the gasket is installed, a leak test is conducted to verify whether the flange connection system and the treated sealing surfaces are airtight. Operating conditions of the equipment: Temperature: 180°F (82°C).
