On November 26, 2024, the DN3100 ammonia synthesis tower, a key component of the Jiujiang Xinlianxin industrial chain expansion project (Phase I), was successfully tested for pressure resistance at the site of the client in Jiujiang and delivered for acceptance. This ammonia synthesis tower utilizes the Cassali process technology; it operates under severe conditions, making its design and manufacture challenging and requiring high standards in terms of quality and performance. It has a diameter of 3100 mm, a design pressure of 16 MPa, and a design temperature of 300°C. The net weight of a single unit of this equipment is 680,000 Kg. It is the largest ammonia tower in terms of diameter and weight ever built in China to date.
Due to the device’s weight far exceeding transportation limits, conventional overall transportation methods cannot safely deliver it to the site of use. Faced with this challenge, the relevant teams at our company conducted numerous discussions and sent specialists to the owner’s site for on-site inspections; as a result, they decided to adopt a production method that combines prefabrication of the main components in the factory with on-site assembly of some floor panels. The difficulty of manufacturing such a large-scale device on-site is imaginable. For on-site manufacturing, the first issue that needs to be overcome is the location problem. Our company’s project team visited the client’s site on four occasions, conducting numerous consultations and discussions with the client, the design institute, the installation company, and the foundation construction team. As a result, a comprehensive, thorough, and feasible manufacturing plan was developed to ensure that the limited space at the site could meet the requirements for on-site manufacturing.
Second is the environmental issue: since the manufacturing site is located near the Yangtze River, the humidity is very high, and construction there is also affected by unpredictable factors such as wind and rain. Since this equipment is made of Cr-Mo steel, the welding environment must meet very strict requirements. The company’s on-site construction team effectively addressed this drawback by building temporary shelters, adding barriers, and increasing the frequency of preheating.
