Standard 151-2014 specifies that the minimum weld leg size for continuous double-sided welding on the inner walls of partitions and tube boxes is 0.75 times the thickness of the partition. If a groove is made in the partition, which part should determine the size of the weld leg? Is this requirement still applicable when full penetration welding is achieved with a groove?
A groove-cut, fully penetrated structure provides better strength assurance, but the weld leg height should not be reduced just because of a fully penetrated structure
If a high weld quality is to be ensured, then doesn’t it make no difference whether it’s full penetration welding or fillet welding? If that’s the case, why go to the trouble of making grooves for full penetration welding?
I believe that the reason for specifying the weld leg height is mainly that the partition is merely a structural component; it only needs to have a certain level of strength, and full penetration is not necessary at all. That’s why a specific weld leg height has to be specified. I haven’t seen any partitions that need to be welded through yet. .
