Each has its advantages and disadvantages; open channels are easy to clean and maintain, while buried pipes keep the ground surface clean and safe. Open channels require a certain amount of land, and safety and land use are the drawbacks. Clogging and cleaning of hidden pipes is a problem.

From a thermodynamic perspective, there’s no difference; since the size of the heat exchanger remains constant, the relative temperatures at the inlet and outlet are essentially the same in both cases. With exposed pipes, only insulation is needed, while for buried pipes, consideration must be given to future maintenance. The most important factor is that the fluid is high-temperature seawater, which has a high corrosion rate; therefore, exposed pipes are easier to inspect and maintain
Yes, but there should be a difference from a thermodynamic perspective; it’s a question from a thermodynamics course, so pipes definitely have their thermodynamic advantages, otherwise this question would make no sense
Perhaps I’m stupid and can’t see the connection to thermodynamics, haha. Seawater is probably used for cooling by absorbing heat, but with the size of the heat exchanger remaining unchanged, the efficiency (in terms of inlet and outlet temperatures) remains roughly the same. What’s being discussed here is whether the pipes should be exposed or buried; in either case, protection is necessary... unless one doesn’t want insulation and chooses to bury them underground without any protection... Only then can I relate it to the concepts of thermodynamics... using the atmosphere for cooling or the soil to absorb heat... But... cooling with the atmosphere can cause burns, while burying them underground accelerates corrosion... Given these considerations, is it still necessary to take into account thermodynamics? These are just my humble opinions...
You’re too modest; it probably really has nothing to do with thermodynamics, and our teacher didn’t go into further explanation on this topic either.
