How can plate heat exchangers reduce internal leakage? After an internal leak occurs, how can we detect it as an internal leak right away?
First of all, the materials chosen (including those for the panels and seal strips) must be appropriate! The operating conditions must also be correct, and the sealing must be good! Internal leakage will cause the media on the hot and cold sides to mix; by monitoring temperature and flow rates, it should be possible to determine this, and if not, sampling for testing is necessary!
Internal leakage was detected during use, but it was noticed fairly promptly; no accidents occurred, nor was there any economic loss to the equipment. Internal leakage is terrible.
Firstly, the working medium and working pressure must meet the design parameters of the plate heat exchanger in order to prevent corrosion and erosion. In the event of internal leakage, the media in different flow channels can mix with each other, which allows it to be determined whether there is an internal leak.
By observing changes in the operating parameters, it is clear that there are two types of fluids involved in heat exchange; sampling from the low-pressure side at regular intervals and analyzing the composition allows for a determination. When parking, open the exhaust or drain valve to check whether the medium is normal, and pay attention to the properties of the medium.
Can we only pay attention to changes in parameters? Is there no good solution? The equipment operates 24 hours a day.
Personal suggestion: install a temperature sleeve on the return pipe
It won’t work if the internal leakage is reduced.

But the most important thing is to select an appropriate heat exchanger material for the medium when choosing the operating conditions; additionally, if other media need to be added during operation, it is necessary to seek advice first. The main cause of internal leakage is corrosion leading to perforations in the heat exchange plates. When internal leakage occurs, the operating pressure of the medium changes; by installing intelligent monitoring, a range for the operating pressure can be set, allowing for automatic alerts in case of abnormalities. Internal leakage is relatively rare; we use stainless steel plate fins for our products. We believe that internal leakage is caused by quality issues, and it is usually detected during the equipment commissioning process.
