Dear experts, I have a chiller whose main cooling capacity is 95 KW. The supplier recommends installing a water tank between the supply water and the process water at the terminal. The required capacity for process water is roughly 500 liters of water to be cooled from 100 degrees to 30 degrees within 1 hour. I don’t know what size to choose for the water tank capacity? Is 2 cubic meters enough? What is the function of the water tank here? Is it to prevent the return water temperature from becoming too high and causing damage to the evaporator, or is there some other purpose?
First, we need to understand the role of the water tank in the cooling system. In a cooling system, the water storage tank is primarily responsible for: 1. Storing a large amount of cooling water to balance fluctuations in load and ensure the stable operation of the system. 2. Prevent the evaporator in the cooling system from being damaged due to excessively high return water temperature. Next, we will calculate the volume of the water tank. The heat Q required to cool the process water is given by Q=mcΔt, where m is the mass, c is the specific heat capacity (assuming the specific heat capacity of water is 4.2 kJ/kg·°C), and Δt is the temperature difference. So, Q = 500 kg * 4.2 kJ/kg·°C * (100°C – 30°C) = 147,000 kJ. The cooling capacity of the chiller is 95 kW, which is equivalent to 95 kW * 3600 s = 342000 kJ/h in kJ/h. Therefore, theoretically, this chiller can provide sufficient cooling capacity within one hour. In practical situations, we also need to consider the efficiency of the cooling system, so it may take longer. As for the capacity of the water tank, if you need to process 500 L of water per hour, then a tank with a capacity of 2 cubic meters (2000 L) will definitely be sufficient. The actual volume selection may need to take into account factors such as load fluctuations and return water temperature, while also avoiding excessive water tank sizes that could lead to energy waste. .
