One shaft has wear at the bearing area, while the other has wear at the oil seal area. They were sent to the machining workshop for surfacing before further processing. The mechanic told me that only one of the shafts could be machined after surfacing, while the other wouldn’t move; the mechanic suspected that the shaft that wouldn’t move was made of stainless steel. What kind of material is stainless steel? Can’t the heat-treated 45# steel also not be turned? What could be the reason why the car isn’t moving? Thank you!

The shaft material may be one of 1Cr13, 2Cr13, or 31Cr13. It belongs to martensitic stainless steel and is often used as a material for shafts. It might be this type of material that is welded. I don’t know what welding material was used either. Before welding, it is necessary to identify the material first and then select the appropriate welding material for the task.

It’s certain that the surfacing area is difficult to machine in the first place. If the 45# weld has been tempered, it should still be possible to move it; if it doesn’t move at all, it’s likely a problem with the welding material. Make sure to identify the material before welding; using the wrong welding material can lead to problems

The main consideration is the material aspect; carbon steel, low-carbon steel, various stainless steels, and other welding materials cannot be used indiscriminately. Using the wrong welding material can lead to cracks, fractures, and other issues. Also, using stainless steel won’t cause the vehicle to fail to move; stainless steel is relatively soft and a bit sticky. If you use a welding rod with higher hardness, it might be impossible to turn it at that time. Another reason why the workpiece cannot be machined is the skill level of the welder; if the temperature is too high during surfacing or there are too many weld scars, it becomes difficult to machine as well.
