Considerations before installation The Rosemount 3100 series can be used for measuring level and volume in open or enclosed tanks, or for measuring flow rate in open channels. Transmitters with a glass-filled nylon housing must be installed in a UV-resistant location (for example, covered to prevent direct sunlight) to prevent the plastic material used from aging over time. Note: For special conditions for safe use, please refer to “Product Certification” on page 23 of the 3100 Series Transmitter Operation Guide. Safety considerations 1. Installation should be carried out by properly trained personnel in accordance with the applicable operating procedures. 2. If this device may come into contact with corrosive substances, the user shall be responsible for taking appropriate preventive measures to protect it from adverse effects, thereby ensuring that its level of protection is not reduced. Eroding substances are acidic liquids or gases that corrode metals, or solvents that may affect polymer materials. Appropriate preventive measures include including regular checks in routine inspections, or determining from the material data sheets whether it can withstand specific chemicals. 3. This device can only be wiped with a damp cloth ; Solvents must not be used. 4. This device cannot be repaired by the user, but can be replaced with a certified equivalent unit. Repairs can only be carried out by the manufacturer or authorized service personnel. 5. This transmitter is of the double-insulation type, therefore no protective grounding is required. The cable sheath/shielding should be connected to an appropriate ground point at only one end. 6. Note that if the equipment is used in a manner other than that specified by the manufacturer, the protection provided by the equipment may be reduced. 7. To ensure compliance with electromagnetic compatibility requirements in any EU member state, it should not be installed in residential areas. Note: It is recommended not to install the transmitter near sources of electrical noise, such as variable frequency drives or other high-power electrical devices. Environmental considerations: 1. The Rosemount 3105 transmitter is certified as intrinsically safe (IS) for installation in hazardous areas. 2.3101, 3102, and 3105 are designed for installation on open or enclosed storage tanks. They are weatherproof and can prevent dust from entering. 3. The transmitter should be avoided from being installed near heat sources. Installation notes: 1. Use the included 2-inch screws to install the transmitter above the liquid level, but the distance from the liquid surface should not be less than 0.3 meters (12 inches). The transmitter cannot detect any liquid level that is less than 0.3 meters (12 inches) from the surface of the transmitter. 2. The transmitter should be installed vertically to ensure good echoes returning from the liquid surface. The half-angle of the crossbeam is 6 degrees (see Figure 2 below). 3. Echoes generated by obstacles in the storage tank or well may be confused with the actual liquid level echoes. Obstacles within the beam angle produce strong spurious echoes. The transmitters should be placed in appropriate locations as much as possible to avoid false echoes. 4. To avoid detecting unnecessary objects in storage tanks or wells, it is recommended that the lateral distance between the transmitter’s centerline and any obstacles be at least 1.3 inches per foot (11 cm per meter) (see Figure 2 below). 5. If the transmitter is placed on the side of the tank or well that is close to it, and the outer wall of that side is smooth with no protrusions, no false echoes will be generated. However, the amplitude of the echo will still decrease. It is recommended to ensure that the distance from the transmitter to the exterior wall is at least 0.3 meters (12 inches) when installing the transmitter, in order to avoid a significant reduction in the echo amplitude. 6. If the transmitter is installed in a closed tank with a dome, it should be avoided to place it at the center of the tank’s roof, as the roof may act as a parabolic mirror and generate interfering echoes. 7. Transmitters should be avoided in applications that may cause severe condensation on their surface. 8. If the transmitter is installed on a support or nozzle, its surface should extend at least 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) into the tank. 9. If the transmitter is to be used in an environment exposed to direct sunlight, which may cause high temperatures on its external surfaces, it is recommended to take shading measures.
