The main reasons are as follows: (1) The foundation bolts of vertical equipment do not come into direct contact with the working medium; therefore, the corrosion process is complex, the corrosion rate is slow, the signs of corrosion are not obvious, and it is difficult to detect them. (2) It is assumed that the equipment’s foundation bolts belong to the foundation part of the equipment, and are unrelated or only minimally related to the equipment itself; they are taken into consideration during the installation of the equipment, but not afterwards. (3) To date, there have been no other serious incidents such as equipment failures caused by corrosion and cracking of the equipment’s foundation bolts, and thus no painful lessons to learn from. In fact, just as equipment can be corroded, its foundation bolts can also become corroded; in severe cases, this may lead to equipment failures as well as injuries or deaths. So, how can we carry out effective anti-corrosion treatment for anchor bolts? It is necessary to clarify the causes of anchor bolt corrosion: (1) Factors related to the medium. Although some anchor bolts do not come into direct contact with the medium, for various reasons, corrosive media can very likely reach these anchor bolts, thereby causing corrosion in them. (2) Environmental factors. In a humid environment, screws made of carbon steel will corrode. (3) Reason related to bolt material. During design, although anchor bolts are selected in accordance with regulations, only their strength is taken into account; the fact that they can corrode under certain conditions during use is not considered, which is why corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel are not used.
