During the manufacturing of heat exchangers and air coolers designed for use with wet hydrogen sulfide, heat treatment and hardness testing (with a hardness level of less than 200 HB) are required. How do manufacturers typically carry out heat treatment and hardness testing? Are there any standards for these processes?
For small-sized components, overall heat treatment can be carried out in a furnace; for large-sized components, local heat treatment of the welds is performed after welding. The hardness is measured using a portable hardness tester on the actual welds. If structural constraints prevent measurement on the actual product, a welding test piece made from the same material and using the same welding process can be prepared, and the hardness of the welds on this test piece is then used as a substitute
