The environment surrounding the outer wall of the oil tank is a chemical industrial atmosphere, which results in less corrosion compared to inside the tank; however, excellent weather resistance is required. Furthermore, the ambient temperature in which the oil tanks are located can have an adverse effect on the products; for example, high temperatures in summer are not conducive to the storage of oils with low boiling points, so insulation and cooling measures must be taken to reduce oil loss and ensure production safety. The recommended anti-corrosion coating scheme for the external wall of oil tanks is: epoxy iron oxide rust inhibitor primer + epoxy ferrochrome intermediate coat + thermal insulation and anti-corrosion topcoat for the tank. For sandblasted surfaces, an epoxy zinc-rich primer can be used to enhance corrosion resistance. The insulation coating for storage tanks can reduce the temperature of oil products by 7–10°C during the hot summer months (compared to when no such coating is used), and it boasts excellent weather resistance, corrosion protection, and decorative properties; the paint film is resistant to washing by spray water.
