Dear friends: When it comes to salt spray corrosion in coastal enterprises, what is the mechanism of salt spray corrosion?
In simple terms, it is mainly the electrochemical corrosion of sodium chloride
The corrosion of metal material surfaces by salt spray is caused by chloride ions penetrating the oxide and protective layers on the surface of the metal, thereby initiating an electrochemical reaction with the underlying metal. At the same time, chloride ions possess a certain amount of hydration energy; they can easily be adsorbed in the pores and cracks on the metal surface, displacing the oxygen in the chloridized layer. This transforms insoluble oxides into soluble chlorides, thereby changing a passivated surface into an active one.
I have a question: 1. Is there chlorine in the air by the sea? 2. Is corrosion of equipment by the sea caused by moisture or by chlorine? Or both?
I vividly remember going for a walk along the coast of Zhanjiang; the iron chains on those seawalls were severely corroded due to the action of seawater and sea winds, which accelerated the corrosion process greatly!
