The graphite material used to manufacture chemical equipment made of graphite undergoes a graphitization process during which large amounts of volatile substances are released at high temperatures of 2800–3000 degrees, resulting in the formation of numerous open and closed pore channels. At this point, the graphite material becomes a porous substance similar to honeycomb briquettes. The materials and components used to manufacture graphite equipment (heat exchangers, towers, reactors, piping, etc.) must be impermeable. The process used to achieve this is impregnation, aimed at minimizing the internal porosity; simultaneously, this impregnation process fills the pores in the material, thereby enhancing its physical and chemical strength. Different impregnants and impregnation processes result in varying corrosion resistance and physical and mechanical strength properties of impermeable graphite materials. Graphite material itself has strong corrosion resistance, but during the process of making it impermeable, different impregnants can lead to a decrease in its overall corrosion resistance.
