Glass flake anti-corrosion is used in the wet tower; the medium is a 20% NaOH solution, and waste with a salinity of around 5% is discharged into the wastewater tank. Currently, the COD level in the wastewater tank has reached 20,000; glass flake is suspected to be the cause. When the glass flake samples taken on site are soaked for 10 hours, the COD level reaches 6000.

If it is ordinary building glass, it has no effect on COD, as this type of glass is a stable inorganic material; whether it is intact or broken, there is only a change in its physical state, which does not affect the determination of water’s COD. The salt content is high; if there is a large amount of chlorides present, it will significantly affect the COD value, resulting in higher measured values. However, the change in the COD value from 6000 (for glass flake immersion) to 20000 (for actual water samples) is mainly due to organic substances in the water; it is recommended to use TOC analysis for assessing water quality. At the same time, check whether there are any significant deviations in the analysis methods and procedures for determining COD values; it may not be a problem with the individual operators, but rather the applicable range of the methods exceeds the actual conditions of the water sample.
