What to do when damage occurs to pressure equipment, and how to describe and document that damage? Should it simply state that there are cracks and corrosion, or is it necessary to identify the type of damage and include that information as well?
The description and recording of damage to pressure-bearing equipment should provide as detailed and accurate information as possible regarding the type, location, size, severity, extent of impact, and causes of the damage. To better document and identify damage, it is recommended to not only describe the manifestations of the damage (such as cracks, pits, etc.) but also identify and record the types of damage, such as fatigue fracture, corrosion fatigue, etc. This helps to conduct more in-depth analysis and research on the causes and mechanisms of damage, and to develop corresponding repair and preventive measures. .
It is recommended to refer to API 571 and the GB/T 30579 standard “Identification of Damage Mechanisms in Static Equipment”. These documents provide a very detailed description of the identification of damage modes in pressure-bearing equipment; they cover the description of damage under each mechanism, the affected materials, influencing factors, affected components, damage morphology, inspection and testing methods, as well as preventive measures.
