Polyethylene coatings are among the more advanced anti-corrosion materials used worldwide. This technology involves applying extruded polyethylene on the outside of the pipes, followed by a copolymer adhesive in the middle layer, and molten epoxy powder as the bottom layer. This technology is able to provide effective protection for oil and gas pipelines primarily because the two types of coatings can compensate for each other’s weaknesses, thereby enhancing the pipeline’s corrosion resistance. It is one of the best technologies available today for improving the corrosion resistance of oil and gas pipelines. However, this anti-corrosion technology also has certain drawbacks: the anti-corrosion coating has poor resistance to soil corrosion. Additionally, at high temperatures, it is prone to the problem of cathodic shielding. This problem arises mainly due to the relatively high electrical resistance and poor adhesion of oil and natural gas pipelines.
