Petroleum asphalt has been the most widely used coating in China’s numerous oil and gas pipelines; it is the oldest type of such coating available. This coating is inexpensive and very easy to apply. However, with the continuous development of the economy, there are increasing demands for pipeline transportation of oil and natural gas. In practice, it has been found that this type of coating has several drawbacks: it ages very easily, absorbs moisture readily during application, cannot withstand high temperatures, and has poor antibacterial and stress-resistant properties. If plant roots damage the pipelines, this coating fails to provide adequate protection for the oil and natural gas transport pipelines. This also indicates to some extent that this coating technology is best used in an environment with microorganisms or rootless organisms, and it is necessary to ensure that the environmental conditions in that area are moderate, with temperatures that are not too high.
