General corrosion of metals is also known as uniform corrosion. It refers to the corrosion process occurring simultaneously across the entire metal surface at essentially the same rate. For example, the corrosion of carbon steel in strong acids and strong bases is generally general corrosion. Since this type of corrosion can have its corrosion rate calculated based on the properties of various materials and corrosive agents, it is possible to include a certain margin for corrosion during design. Therefore, the sudden hazards caused by general corrosion are usually minor. For example, high-temperature sulfur corrosion and corrosion in the low-temperature areas at the top of distillation units can both be monitored by enhancing corrosion surveillance, allowing for timely implementation of anti-corrosion measures to ensure the safe operation of the equipment.
