When protection requirements rise to higher levels – a design life of ten years or more, harsh chemical or marine environments, and greater demand for decorative durability – ordinary topcoats are no longer sufficient to meet these demands. III. The \"classic combination\" in practical use: A proven system In actual anti-corrosion projects, a classic combination system that has been tested over decades and can be considered \"textbook-style\" is as follows: zinc-rich primer (1 coat) + epoxy ferrochrome intermediate coat (1–2 coats) + acrylic polyurethane topcoat (2 coats). The total dry film thickness of this system is approximately 200–350 μm; it provides effective protection for more than 10 years in coastal areas and for over 15 years in inland areas. It has been widely used in extremely corrosive environments such as cross-sea bridges, port machinery, petrochemical facilities, power plants, ships, and offshore platforms, and its protective efficacy has been fully proven over time. IV. Key insights for selection and application: Despite their excellent performance, proper selection and installation remain essential to fully utilize their capabilities: Identify the type – aliphatic polyurethanes must be used. Aromatic polyurethanes (such as TDI-type), although inexpensive and having good mechanical properties, are highly prone to yellowing and powdering, and must not be used in outdoor weathering applications. Pay attention to the supporting components: its excellent performance is built on a complete supporting system. In particular, it exhibits excellent adhesion to epoxy intermediate coats, creating a functional loop of \"corrosion protection–shielding–weather resistance\". Strict construction: As a two-component coating, it requires precise mixing, adequate curing, and must be used up within its shelf life. There are clear requirements regarding the cleanliness of the substrate and the construction environment (humidity, temperature). The success of acrylic polyurethane topcoats is a prime example of \"rational design\" in materials science – through precise selection of molecular structures, an optimal balance between protection, durability, applicability, and cost is achieved. It may not be the best in every single performance parameter, but it is undoubtedly the most versatile \"all-rounder\" with the most comprehensive overall performance. This is precisely the fundamental reason why it has been able to dominate the field of heavy-duty anti-corrosion topcoats for decades.
