When using the Haochen CAD software to create drawings, object snapping is one of the commonly used functions, but some beginners in CAD are not very familiar with it. Object capture refers to the use of certain characteristic points in existing graphics, such as endpoints, midpoints, circle centers, intersection points, etc., to assist us in drawing or positioning other graphics. This article provides some introductory tips on object capture in CAD; the following demonstration uses the HaoChen CAD software to help you understand and master these concepts. I. The message indicating an unrecognized command when using CAD software for snapping: Many beginners ask this question: Why is an unknown command shown when trying to snap to a point? For example, when trying to snap to an intersection point, the message displayed is: Command: _int – Unknown command “int”. Press F1 to view help. The reason for this problem is simple: snapping is not a command; it is merely a tool to assist with positioning. Snapping can be used only when drawing or editing commands ask us to specify points, as shown in the figure below. If no command is executed, clicking the capture button directly or entering a capture option will result in an error message indicating that the command is not recognized. Such problems tend to occur in lower versions, as these versions allow the object snap toolbar to be displayed. When drawing, if one thinks they need to snap to a certain point, they simply click the snap button on the toolbar without first issuing the CAD drawing command. II. Object snap settings and invocation methods: Some people prefer to have all object snap options enabled, so as to avoid having to adjust the snap settings in different situations; however, this approach is not ideal. Because when the cursor is moved while drawing or editing, CAD must constantly determine which points meet the criteria; the more options that are set, the more calculations need to be performed. If the graphic is particularly complex and dense, this not only affects performance but also leads to the capture of multiple points at once, which in turn hinders our ability to locate and draw accurately. The recommended approach is to enable several commonly used capture options, such as endpoints, midpoints, intersection points, and circle centers; other options can be called temporarily through the toolbar, SHIFT+right-click menu, or by directly entering shortcut keys. In older versions of CAD, to set fixed snap options, it was necessary to open the Object Snap Settings dialog box, which is why many people found it troublesome. In the higher versions, a dropdown menu has been added to the status bar at the bottom, making the settings process simpler. There is no longer any need to enable all capture methods, as shown in the figure below. III. How is the capture sensitivity controlled? Points can be captured when the crosshair is near the edges of the graphic; what determines this distance, that is, the sensitivity? This sensitivity can be controlled; there is a setting for \"target box size\" in the OP options dialog. However, in newer versions, the automatic capture target box is not displayed by default, so we cannot notice its effect, as shown in the figure below. The auto-capture target box is a square displayed at the center of the crosshair; graphics can be captured when their boundaries fall within this target box. When selecting an object, the box in the center of the crosshair represents the selection pickbox; it is the capture target box that appears during capturing. We can turn on the display of the automatic capture target frames to take a look; the default sizes of the two frames are different. It can be seen that the square in the center of the crosshair changes size when selecting an object or a positioning point. Since not many people pay attention to the size of the capture target frame, and some have reported that it interferes with positioning, in later versions the capture target frame is no longer displayed by default. IV. How to switch when multiple points can be captured at the same time: When the area is crowded with graphics, moving the cursor to a certain location will result in multiple points meeting the criteria being detected, but only one point can be captured at a time. What should we do if the point that is captured isn’t the one we need? If this situation occurs, we have two options: 1. Zoom in the view to reduce the number of points that can be captured within the capture target frame, thereby allowing us to locate the desired point with precision. 2. Use the TAB key to switch, allowing you to move between multiple points that can be captured at the same time, until the capture marker indicates the point we need. V. Why are the set capture options canceled? This phenomenon usually does not occur if no professional software or plugins are installed. In some professional software or plugins, such as HaoChen Architecture software, the capture mode is set according to the requirements of a particular command when that command is executed, and it is restored to its original setting after the command has been completed. However, if there are issues with command execution and the settings are not restored properly after modifying the capture options, it may result in the capture options we set being canceled. In some of the functions of these professional software programs, there are switches that allow one to turn off the capturing capability of those programs. If you encounter a similar problem, you can pay attention to see which function of the professional software or plugin causes it, and check whether the software has any relevant settings.
