The Zhangping Fertilizer Factory in Fujian Province was built on the ruins of the former Zhangping Steel Plant; it is a fertilizer factory designed with an annual production capacity of 5,000 tons of synthetic ammonia (which was later increased through expansion to a maximum of 15,000 tons per year). Zhangping Fertilizer Factory is the first fertilizer factory in western Fujian, with main products including synthetic ammonia and ammonium bicarbonate fertilizers. The Zhangping Fertilizer Factory was established in the spring of 1965. In those difficult days of entrepreneurship, the first generation of fertilizer workers built the factory buildings by hand, transported the machinery, and installed the equipment; it took only one year to get the plant up and running. The Zhangping Fertilizer Factory once enjoyed glory for its innovations in carbonized coal ball technology in the 1970s, as well as having the reputation of being a model factory in the early 1980s. It trained many talented professionals in the fertilizer industry for factories in western Fujian, throughout Fujian Province, and even across the country. At its peak, the factory employed over 1,300 people.
