Qian’an Sinochem: Significant Investment Yields a Lush Green Environment Author/Source: Coal Chemicals Date: 2019-08-19 Clicks: 49 On August 13, a special research team focused on gas purification in China’s coal chemicals industry visited Qian’an Sinochem Coal Chemicals Co., Ltd. Entering the factory complex, one is greeted by an abundance of greenery. Upon conducting an in-depth on-site investigation of this coking enterprise located in Tangshan, Hebei, it was found that behind its \"lush green surroundings\" lies the company’s consistent emphasis on energy conservation and environmental protection, with continuous upgrades and improvements in the treatment of waste gas, wastewater, and solid waste. Qianan Sinochem Coal Chemical Co., Ltd. was established on March 30, 2005. It is a key coal chemical project resulting from a strong partnership, complementary strengths, and collaborative efforts among Kailuan Energy Chemical Co., Ltd., Hebei Shougang Qianan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., and Qianan City’s ** enterprises. As part of the steel complex, it is associated with Shougang Co., Ltd.’s Qiansteel Company. According to the management of Qian’an Sinochem Company, the company currently has 6 top-loading coke ovens with a carbonization chamber height of 6 meters. In addition, it is equipped with a gas purification system as well as 3 dry quenching systems and waste heat power generation units. The designed production capacity of coke is 3.3 million tons per year. The main products include coke, coal tar, crude benzene, ammonium sulfate, etc. The coke is primarily supplied to Shougang Qianan Steel Company. In 2005, the company carried out the necessary procedures for obtaining approval to operate in the coking industry, and became one of the first enterprises to meet the requirements for entry into this sector. In recent years, Tianan Sinochem Company has introduced a series of effective and practical measures, undertaking a range of substantial investments to improve the ecological environment. For example, since 2016, nearly 150 million yuan has been invested in building three sets of flue gas desulfurization and denitration systems for coke ovens; an investment of 400 million yuan is planned for the renovation of coal storage areas into enclosed silos, with the first phase of this project set to be put into use in the near future. Qianan Sinochem always adheres to high standards and requirements, and carries out comprehensive prevention and control of pollution sources such as water, gas, slag, and dust in a thorough manner. In terms of waste gas treatment, Qianan Sinochem has installed 21 sets of waste gas treatment facilities such as coal-loading dust removal and coke-pushing dust removal systems, which are currently operating well. Three sets of flue gas desulfurization and denitration systems for coke ovens have been installed, using an SCR + ammonia-based desulfurization + GH heat exchanger treatment process; the emission concentrations of pollutants SO2 and NOx in the treated exhaust gas meet the specified emission limits. After purification, the gas produced by coke ovens is supplied in its entirety to Qiangang Company for use, aside from what is used internally, thereby achieving 100% utilization of the coke oven gas. To improve the efficiency of gas desulfurization and address the issue of treating desulfurization wastewater, a project was established to recover salts from this wastewater; pure salts such as ammonium thiocyanate and sulfuric acid an were extracted from it, enabling comprehensive utilization. Construction is underway on a project to convert coal storage areas into enclosed silos; in the future, open-air stacking of coal will be eliminated, and storage and transportation will take place in fully enclosed conditions, which will enable effective control of dust emissions during the coal preparation process. In terms of wastewater treatment measures, Qianan Sinochem has built two phenol-cyanide wastewater treatment plants; the designed treatment capacities of these plants are 150 tons per hour and 100 tons per hour respectively. At the same time, a water treatment center is being built to carry out advanced treatment of all the wastewater generated by the plant, including coking wastewater, production wastewater, and domestic wastewater. At present, the yield of wastewater treatment effluent across the entire plant exceeds 84%, effectively reducing the consumption of fresh water for industrial use. In terms of the treatment of solid (hazardous) waste, it mainly includes hazardous wastes such as dust ash and tar residues, desulfurization wastewater, spent activated carbon, and used mineral oil. Among them, the dust collected for cleaning is exported for use as an ingredient in sintered ore; hazardous wastes such as tar residue and spent activated carbon are mixed with coal for coke production; desulfurization wastewater is treated to extract useful components from it, while waste mineral oil is entrusted to qualified entities for comprehensive disposal, thereby achieving comprehensive treatment of all solid (hazardous) wastes within the plant.
