At 18:30 on November 5, the Northwest Branch of Shiliu Chemical Construction completed the installation of the 5th high-pressure flash tank as part of the 1.8 million tons per year ethylene glycol production project operated by Shaanxi Coal Group’s Yulin Chemical facility. With this, all 5 high-pressure flash tanks in the black water flash system have been installed. It is reported that the slag water treatment system for gasification units comprises 5 blackwater flash systems, each paired with a gasification furnace. The high-pressure flash tower serves as the main reactor in these blackwater flash systems and is also the first stage in the slag water treatment process. The 5 high-pressure flash towers are the most difficult equipment to install within the slag water treatment system. To ensure the successful completion of this lifting operation, the project team carried out specialized organization and scientific planning in advance, deploying a large number of personnel as well as various construction equipment. In total, over 150 people were involved in the lifting process, and professional lifting equipment of different types was used, including 400-ton crawler cranes and 100-ton truck cranes. Over a period of 19 days, from October 17 to November 5, 2020, this milestone project was finally completed. The Shaanxi Coal Group Yulin Chemical Company’s demonstration project for the utilization of coal at different quality levels to produce new chemical materials is currently the largest coal chemical project under construction in the world. The project covers an area of approximately 13 square kilometers, with a total planned investment of around 126.2 billion yuan. It is capable of processing about 24 million tons of coal per year, and it includes 27 processing units along with associated utility systems. These include processes for the medium- and low-temperature pyrolysis of 15 million tons of coal, the production of 5.6 million tons of methanol, 1.8 million tons of ethylene glycol, 2 million tons of olefins, as well as downstream products derived from these raw materials. Among them, the first phase of Project 1, which involves an ethylene glycol production facility with an annual capacity of 1.8 million tons, covers an area of approximately 4.4 million square meters. The total investment required for this project is estimated at around 26.5 billion yuan. It is currently the largest coal-based ethylene glycol production plant under construction in the world, with completion scheduled for June 2021 ; Phase 1, stage 2 involves the construction of a facility capable of producing 5.6 million tons per year of methanol and 2 million tons per year of olefins, along with related processing units; construction is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2020 and be completed by the end of 2023. Phase II of the project focuses on coal pyrolysis and is also divided into two stages. The first stage involves an industrial demonstration facility for 1.2 million tons per year of pulverized coal pyrolysis and 500,000 tons per year of advanced processing of coal tar; completion of the construction is scheduled for June 2021 ; In the second phase, the scale of pyrolysis will be increased to 15 million tons, and the coal tar industry chain will be expanded to produce aromatics as well as downstream products derived from arylene compounds. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022, with all construction work to be completed by the end of 2025. Yulin Chemical is carrying out the construction of a demonstration project for the production of new chemical materials through the differentiated utilization of coal in the Qingshui Industrial Park of the Yushen Industrial Zone. As the largest coal chemical project under construction globally at present, this project covers an area of approximately 13 square kilometers. The total planned investment is 126.2 billion yuan, and it will be able to process over 24 million tons of coal per year. The project is constructed in two phases and four stages, comprising a total of 27 process units along with associated utility systems. These mainly include the medium- and low-temperature pyrolysis of 15 million tons of coal, the production of 5.6 million tons of methanol, 1.8 million tons of ethylene glycol, 2 million tons of MTO, as well as downstream products derived from these intermediates. The first phase of the project requires an investment of around 70 billion yuan; it will involve the construction of facilities for producing 1.8 million tons per year of ethylene glycol, 5.6 million tons per year of methanol, and 2 million tons per year of olefins, while also generating a large amount of fine chemical products derived from these olefins. The 1.8 million tons per year ethylene glycol production facility is part of the first phase of this project; it is also the largest coal-based ethylene glycol production plant under construction worldwide. The estimated investment for this facility is 26.5 billion yuan. The project utilizes Collin’s patented dry powder gasification technology and Japan’s patented technology for producing ethylene glycol from syngas. Shanxi Coal Group Yulin Chemical Co., Ltd. and Nippon Kako Kagaku Co., Ltd. jointly invested in establishing Shanxi Coal Group Yulin Chemical Yugao Chemical Co., Ltd. to build and operate facilities for the production of oxalate esters as well as for the hydrogenation of oxalate esters to produce ethylene glycol. One of the overall goals set for the project construction is that by June 30, 2021, both the first phase of Project Phase I, which involves an ethylene glycol production facility with a capacity of 1.8 million tons per year, and the first phase of Project Phase II, which includes a coal pyrolysis facility with a capacity of 1.2 million tons per year along with a pilot plant for the advanced processing of coal tar with a capacity of 500,000 tons per year, should reach mechanical completion – this goal is referred to as “21630”.
