I don’t understand why ultrafiltration membranes are usually placed vertically, while reverse osmosis membranes are generally placed horizontally
Personally, I think ultrafiltration requires backwashing; placing it vertically helps to remove the dirt that has accumulated during backwashing. On the other hand, reverse osmosis does not need backwashing, and when it is placed horizontally, the pressure is relatively uniform, with no difference in pressure between one end and the other
Ultrafiltration membranes can be divided into two types based on their manufacturing method: spiral-wound ultrafiltration membranes and hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membranes. Hollow ultrafiltration membranes are generally installed vertically, which facilitates forward washing, backwashing, chemical cleaning, etc. Roll-type ultrafiltration membranes are produced in limited quantities in China. The most common type is the hollow fiber column membrane.
