Where should one start when designing for dry-running operation?

I used to be an operator, and now that I’ve been working in design for half a year, I don’t know where to start.
Changing careers like this is indeed very difficult, and one can’t even compete with newly graduated college students. One needs to completely settle down, relax, and endure it for 2–3 years in order to barely pass.
Operator to designer – awesome! Someone, why go to a design firm or something like that? Or a research institute?
