Recently, Wanhua Chemical (Fujian) Co., Ltd. announced the first public announcement regarding the environmental impact assessment for a project aimed at producing 600,000 tons of polycarbonate (PC) per year. The project plans to build 3 PC production units with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons each, along with supporting facilities, as well as facilities for producing 108,000 tons of BPA (bisphenol A) per year; this marks further expansion by Wanhua Chemical in the polycarbonate sector. According to Wanhua Chemical’s most recent annual report, the company’s annual PC production capacity has reached 600,000 tons. In 2024, the high-end market share of Wanhua Chemical’s polycarbonate products within its high-performance polymers division ranked first in China; the company’s PC exports were the highest in the country, with a PC production capacity utilization rate of 78%. Wanhua Chemical’s PC-related business focuses on specific high-end industries such as automotive, optical, and medical fields. Through continuous development of premium products, it maintains a leading position in China in terms of product prices and level of differentiation. Among the world’s major PC manufacturers, Covestro is the largest producer of PC, with an existing production capacity of over 1.65 million tons per year – accounting for more than 20% of the global total. It has a production capacity of 550,000 tons per year in China. Next is SABIC, with a production capacity of over 1.2 million tons per year. With the commissioning of this 600,000-ton-per-year PC production project at Wanhua Chemical (Fujian) Co., Ltd., Wanhua Chemical’s PC production capacity will reach 1.2 million tons per year, setting a new record and exceeding the 1-million-ton mark. Wanhua Chemical will thus become the third company in the world to have a PC production capacity of over 1 million tons. The development of polycarbonate in our country
Thank you for sharing; giving roses leaves a pleasant fragrance in one’s hands
As a high-performance engineering plastic, polycarbonate is widely used in fields such as electronics and electrical appliances, automotive components, and optical lenses for medical equipment, thanks to its properties such as light transmittance, impact resistance, and heat resistance. In recent years, with the growth of industries such as 5G communications, new energy vehicles, and wearable devices, the demand for polycarbonate has continued to rise, with a trend toward higher performance and more environmentally friendly materials. Enterprises should use technological innovation as a driving force, focusing on three key areas: high-end development, sustainability, and application-oriented solutions. By developing differentiated products that meet the needs of emerging industries, they can address the issue of overcapacity through industrial chain collaboration and global strategies, ultimately achieving a transition from scale expansion to value creation.
