A CNPC-affiliated company wins the EPC contract for a gas pipeline in Tanzania

According to foreign media reports, the Tanzania Petroleum Development Company (TPDC) has awarded a Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract to China National Petroleum Pipeline Bureau and China National Petroleum Technology Development Co., Ltd., subsidiaries of CNPC. The contract relates to the construction of a gas pipeline from the Ntorya gas field in Tanzania to the Madimba gas processing plant, which has a processing capacity of 210 million cubic feet per day. According to the official website of China National Petroleum Pipeline Bureau Engineering Co., Ltd., the project is located in Mtwara Province, in the southern part of Tanzania. It involves the construction of a 14-inch high-pressure natural gas pipeline approximately 34 kilometers long in the newly developed Entoya gas field area, along with supporting facilities such as the main station, valve rooms, and reception stations. The project covers all aspects of the process, including design, procurement, manufacturing supervision, construction, commissioning, drying, intelligent diameter measurement, and putting the system into operation. Currently, TPDC, Aminex PLC, and ARA Petroleum Tanzania (APT) are jointly developing the Entoya gas field, with APT acting as the operator; it received development approval from Tanzania’s Ministry of Energy in the third quarter of 2024. The gas field has had its reserves confirmed at 1.8 trillion cubic feet through two testing wells, with an average daily production per well during the tests amounting to 20 million standard cubic feet. Under the natural gas sales agreement signed between APT and TPDC in January 2024, production is expected to reach 40–60 million cubic feet per day in the first year after operation, rising to 140 million cubic feet per day within a few years.

It is estimated that we will still need to do the work after it goes into operation; otherwise, the gas will be diverted through openings along the way to be used for cooking at home.
