Comprehensive Guide to Debugging 3.1 Key Points to Verify Before Debugging • Equipment Installation: The locator is firmly installed, with no looseness in magnetic strips, screws, etc., and the handwheel is set to automatic mode. •Gas source conditions: The gas source is supplied on-site, and the pressure must be within the range of the maximum value specified on the actuator’s nameplate plus 5–10 PSI. •Signal and power supply: The 4-20mA control signal must be delivered accurately; if solenoid valves are used, it is necessary to ensure that their power supply is activated. •Tools and modes: Prepare HART communication tools such as TREX, and clarify the debugging scenarios – new locators or those with large errors require both “configuration” and “debugging”, while routine maintenance only requires “debugging”. During debugging, the instrument must be switched to Out of Service mode, and it should be switched back to In Service mode once the process is complete. 3.2 Core debugging steps: 1. HART connection and mode entry: Connect the TREX cable to the locator’s terminal blocks, select HART connection, and choose the ONLINE mode to access the main menu. 2. Configuration settings: Navigate to the relevant settings module via the main menu to set parameters such as instrument mode and input/output configurations. If only configuration is done without verification, it is necessary to switch to In Service mode after completion ; If verification is required later, keeping it in Out of Service mode will suffice. 3. Travel calibration: Select “calibration” from the main menu, then choose “travel calibration” from the sub-menu; select the automatic/manual calibration mode as required. The calibration steps for double-acting and single-acting types are basically the same; the only additional step for double-acting types is the adjustment of Relay A. New positioners are already calibrated at the factory, so it is recommended to skip this step. During the calibration process, the valve will automatically complete the entire sequence of operations including opening, closing, setting at the 50% intermediate position, and pressure control; once the calibration is finished, click confirm. 4. Feedback and feedback/actuation adjustment: Enter the module related to \"Valves and Actuators\"; feedback adjustment is used to enable feedback functionality, allowing the valve position signal to be sent back to the system ; Reaction force adjustment only changes the feedback output display; if the given signal is opposite to the valve position, a dual-acting valve requires an adjustment to the gas circuit, while a single-acting valve needs a replacement of the positioner or actuator. 5. Gain optimization settings: Automatic tuning will select an appropriate Tuning (C-M) gain by default; the C direction indicates low speed but high stability, while the M direction indicates high speed but low stability. If issues such as valve oscillation, overshoot, or slow response occur, manual adjustment can be made ; Special operating conditions can be further optimized using Expert-level PID parameters.
