I read some information online about plate heat exchangers, which have a high heat transfer coefficient, a low fouling coefficient, and various other advantages. What puzzles me is that if plate heat exchangers are really that good, they should be used on a fairly large scale, but in reality, they aren’t used that often. Those who have used plate heat exchangers, please share your experiences and opinions.

Plate heat exchangers do offer excellent heat transfer performance. Their disadvantages are: 1. They tend to get clogged (by sediment and salt crystals); 2. The gasket is damaged during the cleaning process, and the cost of replacing it is high.
Isn’t it said that it has good scale prevention properties?
I have mainly used plate heat exchangers and spiral plate heat exchangers. These devices are indeed compact and efficient, but they also exhibit a significant pressure drop. Once a spiral plate heat exchanger gets clogged, it’s no longer usable (which means high requirements are placed on the cleanliness of the material). The sealing gaskets in plate heat exchangers present another problem. Both types of heat exchangers have limitations regarding the operating pressure – it cannot be too high (this is probably a major drawback). On top of that, their price is not cheap

The choice of heat exchanger type mainly depends on the specific site conditions, the best cost-performance ratio, and the available funding for the project.
