I read in the book that it’s to prevent explosions; could you be more specific?
Oxygen generates high heat due to friction with the tube wall at high speeds, and oil waxes are flammable substances; oxygen acts as a catalyst for combustion, so the hot oil and fats may catch fire and explode.
Is there any connection with static electricity here?
It may explode due to the presence of oil.

Pure gases do not generate static electricity. Oil is dangerous because it can catch fire easily when in contact with pure oxygen, rather than exploding
