I have a question for experienced marine engineers: when carrying out a batch hydrogenation reaction, pressure relief valves are installed in accordance with the requirements for processes that are subject to strict supervision, and a pressure relief tank is used to contain the fluid that is released after the pressure relief valves activate. Is it required that this pressure relief tank be located above the hydrogenation reactor? The reactor is currently on the third floor; is it acceptable to place the pressure relief tank on the outdoor ground? Some colleagues say that the pressure relief tank should be placed above the reactor to prevent hydrogen gas from accumulating in the pipelines in case of an explosion, while others believe it is not necessary. There’s absolutely no need for that; your colleague who said hydrogen has accumulated in the pipelines doesn’t have any sense of safety at all. It can be placed on the floor. From a safety perspective, hydrogenation systems need to be isolated from oxygen, and HAZOP analyses show that it is safer to keep hydrogen contained within the system. The actual challenge lies in determining the size of the burst disc; RUNAWAY or decomposition scenarios are quite complex. It is fine to have residual hydrogen in the system.
For flammable and explosive media, remember that after the rupture disc releases pressure, there must be no sparks or debris.
