A new DN200 carbon steel pipeline is to be constructed, with hydrogenated diesel as the fluid, and a design pressure of 0.6 MPa. Can it be pressure-tested with nitrogen? What should be kept in mind?
A pressure of 0.6 MPa should be sufficient; before inflating, check to ensure that the design pressure of the pipes meets the requirements and that all flange bolts on the pipeline are tightened. The inflation process is slow; do not approach areas where the pipes are prone to bursting. The main concern is some minor mistakes, such as installing only 2 out of the 4 bolts on a flange, or performing spot welding on a certain elbow without completing the welding process – these kind of extreme situations. A little air leakage under normal conditions is not dangerous
Pressure testing can be carried out using nitrogen; there are no special requirements from a technical standpoint. It should be noted that for pressure testing at least two gauges are required, and both of them must have passed their regular inspection

Welds, flange ends, equipment interfaces, and so on all require bubble tests. Since they are less sensitive to air pressure, unlike water pressure where the effects are more obvious – a slight leak results in a significant drop in pressure – if there are small defects, the pressure drop in those areas is usually still within acceptable limits. Therefore, it is recommended that you conduct bubble tests. Large flange ends can be sealed with tape and a hole made in them; when performing air pressure tests, attention must be paid to the influence of temperature, as the temperature differences at the start and end of the test should not be too large

Generally, the construction company will provide a pressure testing kit; you need to check this kit and verify its contents. It mainly depends on how the contract is drafted, but usually it is the construction company that carries out this task, with the process being checked and confirmed thereafter. Looking at these specifications, 1) the pressure testing and sealing tests of the pipeline valves prior to installation can be carried out by the construction party itself; these tests must comply with the requirements specified in the construction and acceptance standards indicated in the construction drawings. For gas pressure testing, it should be at least 0.66 MPa, right? That’s already above the limit
